The County of Wythe seeks qualified firefighters to fill paid part-time day shifts.

These county employees will staff two-person daylight shifts weekdays at Max Meadows Fire Department, supplementing volunteer fire and accident response to meet Wythe County’s desired public safety outcomes for residents, businesses and visitors.

Employees will be scheduled for up to 30 hours (three 10-hour shifts) per week, typically between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with primary duties in: emergency response; apparatus checks and maintenance; facilities and equipment maintenance; training; response records and reporting.

Scheduling will be flexible based on applicant availability.

The department serves the northeastern portion of Wythe County, including the busy eastern intersection of Interstates 81 and 77, several major truck stops, fuel centers and RV parks along the interstates, major industries and construction sites at Progress Park and a significant amount of national forest property.

Preferred qualifications and certifications include: Firefighter II, or ability to obtain within six months of hire; Hazardous Materials Operations; Emergency Vehicle Operations. Applicants may not volunteer with Max Meadows or another Wythe County volunteer fire department. The positions report to the County Emergency Management office.

Hourly pay commensurate with experience and training. Acceptable driving history required, along with clear drug screen, criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
