Wythe County Officials Approve Budget PDF Print E-mail

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – The Wythe County Board of Supervisors has approved the Fiscal Year 2018-19 budget totaling $80,445,447. This is approximately $6 million less than the 2017-18 Budget.

Highlights of the 2018-19 budget include $480,000 for four full time and nine part time school resource officers. This provides a school resource officer for each school. The county has received a grant for $33,563 from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Service to assist with costs for one School Resource Officer.

Wythe County Board of Supervisors Chair Tim Reeves said the board worked hard on the budget.

“We are glad we could come up with the money for School Resource Officers and the rest of the money for the restoration of George Wythe High School,” Reeves said. “School safety is our number one priority.”

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors continues to show their support of the George Wythe High School renovation project by including an additional $2,250,000 for this project. This provides a total renovation project budget of $12,250,000.

The budget also includes additional operational funding for fire departments and rescue squads. The Board has included capital improvement funding of $800,000 for replacement vehicles for the fire departments.

“The Wythe County Board of Supervisors appreciates the hard work and dedication of the volunteer firefighters and the volunteers and paid staff of the rescue squads,” Wythe County Administrator Stephen Bear said.

The adopted budget does include a $.05 real estate tax increase. This increase is necessary to cover the debt service for the school renovation project, funding for school resource officers and additional fire department replacement vehicles.

Wythe County still has one of the lowest real estate rates in the region at $0.54. Neighboring counties such as Pulaski have a real estate tax rate of $0.77. Carroll County’s real estate tax rate is at $0.695 and Smyth County’s real estate tax rate is set at $0.74.
