Wythe County Schools ahead of the game in emergency response PDF Print E-mail

On Dec. 8, 2011, local emergency responders and school representatives came together at Wytheville Community College to attend a crisis management class given by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for school based incidents. During the class, the instructor was surprised and impressed by the response systems Wythe County already had in place.

Many “students” in the class found themselves at the unfamiliar end of the pencil. The course included a pre-test evaluation, six instructional modules and a post-test evaluation.

Students attending the class included several Wythe County principals, local firefighters, sheriff’s office sergeants and representatives, school board personnel and County personnel.

Training a success in Wythe County PDF Print E-mail

Although weather conditions were not ideal, the IED Explosives/Terrorism Awareness Training in Wythe County did take place on Nov. 15 and 16. Instructors and officials from the training believe the knowledge provided there will help to keep all of the areas represented safer.

This two day course was presented by the Department of Criminal Justice Services – Homeland Security Program, FBI, Virginia State Police and Wythe County Sheriff’s office. With 42 participating instructors, firefighters, and EMS personnel, the training was seen as huge success in explosives safety and the war on terrorism.

It was designed to enhance an investigator’s proficiency and ability to recognize or identify conventional explosives, improvised explosives and improvised explosive devices (IED’s), while conducting an investigation.
