The County of Wythe seeks qualified firefighters to fill part-time daytime shifts at Max Meadows Fire Department, supplementing volunteer fire and accident response to meet Wythe County’s desired public safety outcomes for residents, businesses and visitors. Employees will be scheduled for 30 hours per week or less, with primary duties in: emergency response; apparatus checks and maintenance; training; facilities maintenance; response records and reporting. Scheduling to be determined based on applicant availability.
The department serves the northeastern portion of Wythe County, including the busy eastern intersection of Interstates 81 and 77, several major truck stops, fuel centers and RV parks along the interstates, major industries at Progress Park and a significant amount of national forest property. Required minimum certifications: Firefighter I; Hazardous Materials Operations; Emergency Vehicle Operations. Preferred candidates will also have EMT-B certification or higher.
Hourly pay in line with experience and training. Acceptable driving history required, along with clear drug screen, criminal background check and pre-employment physical. Wythe County is hiring both experienced dispatchers and promising trainees for its E911 emergency communications center. The dispatch center is an around-the-clock operation, all day, every day, and is the heart of operations for local law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical services.
WHAT DISPATCHERS DO: Receive phone calls and texts for service from the public for police, fire and rescue. Sends police, fire and rescue personnel to emergency scenes by radio communication and paging. Entry and inquiry into VCIN/NCIC/DMV records via data terminal. Operate modern and fast-paced computer-aided dispatch and mapping. Carry out assigned and related tasks as required.
OUR EXPECTATION: We prefer certified applicants with at least two years of recent dispatching experience. We will first interview candidates with experience – or a combination of experiences - with Spillman, 911 mapping, VCIN/NCIC, warrant processing, certified trainers and/or first responder. Must have good keyboarding skills, be able to obtain VCIN/NCIC certification, communicate professionally and clearly via telephone and radio, and quickly handle multiple tasks simultaneously under stressful emergency situations. May be required to pass a hearing test. Requires ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be willing to work shifts assigned; shifts are typically 12 hours (either 0600-1800 or 1800 to 0600) with a rotating schedule. Requires high school diploma, pre-employment physical, clean drug screen and background check.
