The Wythe County Board of Supervisors is accepting applications for a full-time Water/Wastewater Operator or Operator Trainee for the Wythe County Water and Wastewater Department. 

Job functions include operation and maintenance of the water and wastewater systems, which service nearly four thousand residential and commercial customers.  Job duties include but are not limited to: operation of wells, pump stations, and wastewater treatment facilities; performing the necessary field and laboratory tests to ensure compliance with State regulations; maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. 

The Operator Trainee will be required to obtain the necessary water and wastewater licenses as a condition of employment within a specified time period.  Job hours include weekends and holidays as directed. 

Applicants who possess or are in the process of obtaining Associates in Applied Science Degree in the field of Environmental Science, Water/Wastewater Specialization, or Chemical/Biological sciences preferred.  Applicant should possess strong organizational and multi-tasking skills, computer skills, mechanical and electrical skills, be self-motivated and possess a team player attitude.  The candidate shall have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

The Wythe County Treasurer is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Deputy Treasurer/Clerk. 

Applicant must possess strong computer skills with the ability to learn quickly; be detail oriented; possess excellent problem solving and communication skills - verbal and written; ability to follow procedures, multi-task in a high paced work environment, handle frequent interruptions and work independently without direct supervision; have knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and equipment; knowledge of or experience in accounting practices and procedures; be self-motivated and a reliable team player.  Duties include but are not limited to: accepting and processing various tax payments; cashiering and balancing a cash drawer daily; assisting the public, attorneys, closing agencies and mortgage companies with tax inquiries; maintaining various office records and preparing office documents for distribution.

Wythe County Parks and Recreation is accepting applications for a full-time Community Recreation Specialist/Program Assistant. This position will be responsible for developing and facilitating community programs primarily based in the eastern and western parts of the county. Examples could include adult fitness, community paint nights, or special senior or children’s events.

Applicants should have experience in parks and recreation, health and fitness, education or program/special event planning. Preferred applicants will have an Associate Degree or higher in Parks & Recreation, leisure studies or related field. In addition to creating community programs in Wythe County they will be assisting with supervision at Rural Retreat Campground and Pool.

The employee must work well with the public and be willing to work weeknights and weekends. Candidates should be positive representatives of the county and be willing to take initiative and constantly work to develop, grow and support new programs to meet specific recreational and health needs of the community.

Compensation commensurate with experience and education with salary scale starting at $29,000 per year plus benefits.

Wythe County is hiring dispatchers, and we’re willing to train the right candidates for our E911 emergency communications center located in downtown Wytheville. The dispatch center operates 24/7, directing communications for law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services.

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED; have some computer skills and knowledge; be able to read and understand a map; be able to hear and speak clearly. Public safety experience helpful but not necessary.

WHAT DISPATCHERS DO:  Receive phone calls and texts for service from the public for police, fire and rescue. Sends police, fire and rescue personnel to emergency scenes by radio communication and electronic paging. Entry and inquiry into VCIN/NCIC/DMV records via data terminal. Operate modern computer-aided dispatch and mapping.  Carry out assigned related tasks as required.

OUR EXPECTATION:  Must be able to type, communicate professionally and clearly via telephone and radio, and quickly and calmly handle multiple tasks simultaneously under stressful emergency situations. May be required to pass a hearing test. Requires ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be willing to work shifts assigned; we have openings on both day shift (6 a.m.-6 p.m.) and night shift (6 p.m.-6 a.m.). Requires high school diploma or equivalent, pre-employment physical, clean drug screen and background check.

The County of Wythe seeks qualified firefighters to fill paid part-time day shifts.

These county employees will staff two-person daylight shifts weekdays at Max Meadows Fire Department, supplementing volunteer fire and accident response to meet Wythe County’s desired public safety outcomes for residents, businesses and visitors.

Employees will be scheduled for up to 30 hours (three 10-hour shifts) per week, typically between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with primary duties in: emergency response; apparatus checks and maintenance; facilities and equipment maintenance; training; response records and reporting.

Scheduling will be flexible based on applicant availability.

The department serves the northeastern portion of Wythe County, including the busy eastern intersection of Interstates 81 and 77, several major truck stops, fuel centers and RV parks along the interstates, major industries and construction sites at Progress Park and a significant amount of national forest property.

Preferred qualifications and certifications include: Firefighter II, or ability to obtain within six months of hire; Hazardous Materials Operations; Emergency Vehicle Operations. Applicants may not volunteer with Max Meadows or another Wythe County volunteer fire department. The positions report to the County Emergency Management office.
