The Solid Waste department head, Landon Sayers, is responsible for coordinating and directing a solid waste program on a county wide basis. He oversees work of the program and operates within a guideline of applicable county, state and federal environmental regulations and policies.

The following waste types WILL BE accepted at the Wythe/Bland Solid Waste Transfer Station, including the following, which are subject to permit specific limitations:
- Agriculture waste
- Ash
- Commercial waste
- Compost
- Construction waste
- Debris
- Demolition waste
- Discarded material
- Garbage
- Household waste
- Industrial waste meeting DEQ criteria
- Inert waste
- Institutional waste (except anatomical waste from health care facilities or infectious waste as specified in the Waste Management Board’s “Regulations Governing Infectious Waste”
- Municipal solid waste
- Putrescible waste
- Refuse
- Residential waste
- Rubbish
- Scrap metal
- Trash
- White goods
- Nonregulated hazardous waste by specific DEQ approval only
- Special wastes as approved by the Director
The following waste types will NOT be accepted:
- Free liquids
- Regulated hazardous wastes
- Solid wastes, residues or soils containing 50.0 parts per million or more PCB’s
- Unstabilized sewage sludge or sludges that have not been dewatered
- Pesticide containers that have not been triple rinsed and crushed
- Drums that are not empty, properly cleaned, and opened
- Waste oil that has not be adequately absorbed through site clean-up
- Contaminated soil unless approved by the Director
Wythe County does not provide door to door pickup of solid waste. Instead, there are trash collection and recycling centers located throughout the county. The centers are free for use by county residents for the disposal of everyday household waste, as well as a place to take recyclable refuse. To see a complete list of the types of waste that can be taken to the trash and recycling centers, please refer to the Solid Waste Ordinance and applicable amendments. Should anyone have concerns, comments, or complaints regarding the operation of any Wythe County Trash and Recycling Center, please call the County Administrator's office at 223-4500.

In 1989, the Virginia Assembly passed a law which required unites of local government in Virginia to implement recycling programs to recycle 25% of their solid waste.

- no plastic film or wraps
- no styrofoam containers
- no pesticide or herbicide containers
- no anti-freeze or motor oil bottles
- no bags or boxes in collection bins
METAL CANS
- steel, bi-metal,tin & aluminum cans
- aluminum siding or other scrap metal
- rinse aluminum foil wrap & foil containers & pans
- empty & rinse all cans
- labels are acceptable on metal cans
- no aerosol cans
- no pesticide or herbicide containers
No business or commercial waste shall be deposited at the convenience centers. Acceptable quantities of waste shall mean no single load can be delivered to a convenience center in a vehicle larger than a pickup truck and the waste shall not be higher than the top of the bed.
